Shortly after the terrorist attacks on America of September 11, 2001, the Rt. Hon. Iain Duncan Smith was elected Conservative Party leader in Great Britain. During his two years as Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Smith emerged as a staunch supporter of Prime Minister Blair's decision to commit British military forces to the American-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq-a policy course that often put the British government starkly at odds with its European neighbors.

The London terrorist bombings on July 7, 2005 raise many important questions about the future of Britain's vital role in the prosecution of the global war on terrorism. How will Britain's new homeland security situation affect its domestic and foreign policy agendas? And how is the post-7/7 world likely to affect the future of the "special relationship" between the United States and Great Britain?

Hudson Institute is honored to host Mr. Smith for what should be an important and lively speech and discussion on Britain's role in the war on terrorism. The session will be moderated by Hudson senior fellow Dr. Hillel Fradkin, director of Hudson's Center on Islam, Democracy and the Future of the Muslim World.

The purpose of Hudson Institute's Center on Islam, Democracy and the Future of the Muslim World is to research and analyze the ideological dimension of Islamism and radical Islam, and to encourage and support moderate and democratic alternatives within the Muslim world. As part of this effort, the center has established the Islam and Democracy Project, a series of seminars and conferences with Muslim scholars and leaders on the present and future relationship between Islam and democracy.
